Bringing home a new dog or puppy is an exciting and rewarding experience.

However, it's also important to lay a strong foundation for their well-being and behavior. By understanding your dog's needs and providing proper care, you can ensure a loving and fulfilling relationship.

Today we will explore three essential aspects of raising a perfect dog. Curious to know what they are? Read on!

1. Know Your Dog

Understanding your dog is crucial for building a strong bond and meeting their specific needs. Here are two key aspects to consider:

  • How to Read Your Dog: Dogs communicate through body language. Pay attention to the overall posture of your dog in relation to the situation they're in (and not just their individual body parts), as these can indicate their mood and intentions. By observing and interpreting these bodily cues, you can better understand their emotional state and respond appropriately.

  • Breed Fulfillment: Simply put- know what your dog was meant to do! Each dog has unique traits and characteristics. Research your dog's breed to learn about their exercise requirements, temperament, and potential health concerns. Better yet, try out different activities with your dog! Providing activities and mental stimulation that align with their preferences will keep them happy, healthy, and fulfilled.

2. Provide The Basics

To ensure your dog's overall well-being, focus on these fundamental aspects:

  • Diet: Feed your dog a balanced diet appropriate for their age, size, and breed. Consult your nutritionist to determine the best meal plan, including the right type and amount of food to keep them healthy and maintain an ideal weight. Remember, the fresher and less processed the food is (as in humans), the better!

  • Exercise: Regular exercise is vital for a dog's physical and mental health. Engage in activities such as walks, runs, or playtime to keep them active. Exercise helps prevent obesity, promotes healthy joints, and reduces behavioral issues caused by excess energy. Bonus- say goodbye to chewed up furniture and shoes when you get home!

  • Daily Routine: Establish a consistent daily routine for your dog. This includes regular mealtimes, potty breaks, exercise sessions, and designated rest periods. Dogs thrive on predictability, and a well-structured routine promotes a sense of security and balance in their lives.

  • Play: Playtime with YOU is not just fun; it's essential for bonding and mental stimulation. Engage in interactive games and provide them with appropriate toys to keep their minds active and prevent boredom. Play also encourages good behavior and helps redirect their energy into positive outlets.

3. Invest in Training

Investing time and effort in training is crucial for a well-behaved dog. Consider the following points:

  • Engagement: Build a strong connection with your dog through activities that you do together daily, such as walks by the beach, fetch, tug, etc. While playtime with other dogs is good, playtime with you has way more benefits! This strong connection will serve as a good foundation for maintaining good behaviors and teaching new good ones.

  • Home Etiquette: Teach your dog proper home etiquette by setting clear boundaries and providing consistent rules. These may be simple but important rules about no jumping on the couch or people, no stealing food on the table, no barking at strangers, and so on. Establish designated areas for potty breaks, sleeping, and eating. This helps prevent accidents and confusion while promoting a structured and harmonious living environment. Remember, dogs thrive in consistency and predictability!

  • Etiquette Outside: It is important to teach your dog how to interact appropriately with other people, animals, and objects such as cars, bikes, garbage bins, etc. Gradually introduce them to new experiences, reward calm or neutral behavior, and always end things on a good note. This helps build their confidence and reduces fear or reactivity towards unfamiliar situations.

With these three points, we hope that you learned a thing or two about raising the 'perfect' dog. But at the end of the day, dear parent, know that there is no perfect dog!

It's all about seeing your dog for who they are, providing the basics, and building a healthy relationship based on clear and consistent communication. A relationship where you understand your dog, and your dog understands you. Putting in the time and effort makes for a fulfilling journey of learning and growing together with your dog, and helps them thrive living in the human world.

Enjoy the rewarding experience of raising a happy and well-connected dog!
